Your teeth may not be at the top of your mind during the holy month of Ramadan, but it’s important that you maintain a good dental routine to ensure a comfortable fasting.

.
#1 Plan ahead

If you haven’t had a dental check-up in the last five months, make sure you book your appointment the soonest. That way, you can treat any problem requiring immediate action. This will ensure a comfortable fasting ahead accompanied with healthy teeth.

While planning the schedule for your fasting routine, make sure you also include your teeth care routine so that you can floss and brush your teeth for two minutes before sleeping and right after Suhur.

.

#2 Hydrate well during non-fasting hours

You may experience a dry mouth while fasting. To avoid that discomfort, make sure to drink plenty of water and fresh juices, and to eat well-balanced meals -rich in fruits and vegetables- when breaking your fast. During Iftar and Suhur, try also to reduce your intake of salty, fried, and spicy foods, as well as caffeinated drinks which can dehydrate you.

.

#3 Keep your breath refreshed

Aside from a dry mouth, you may also experience a bad breath. This is caused by a buildup of bacteria in your mouth.

To fight bad breath and maintain healthy teeth, follow these simple teeth care habits when breaking fast:

  • Regularly brush your teeth, scrape your tongue, and floss
  • Use mouthwash or miswak sticks right after meals
  • Try to limit your garlic and onion intake during Iftar

.

#4 Relax your jaw

You may find yourself grinding your teeth during the day, or experience some tightness in your jaw. We recommend taking deep breathes throughout the day and regularly unclenching your teeth to relax your face muscles and ease the pressure. If you wear a night guard while sleeping, you can keep it on during the day as well. This teeth care routine should relieve your tight jaw.

.

.#5 Keep wearing your BASMA aligners

If you’re currently getting a treatment with BASMA aligners, rest assured: your treatment will not interfere with fasting. You can comfortably wear your aligners for 22 hours every day; just make sure to take them off before Iftar and Suhur, and to rinse them under cool water before putting them back on. Finally, don’t forget to clean them with a toothbrush and some toothpaste while brushing your teeth.
